Nagisa oli cosplaysuunnitelma listallani jo heti Free!:n ensimmäisen kauden loputtua, mutta silloin olin sitä mieltä, että taidot eivät riitä. Nyt Free!:n toisen kauden aikana tykästyin Nagisaan hahmona enstistä enemmän ja päätin, että teen cossin, vaikka taidot ei edelleenkään riitä. Sitten oli päätettävä, että minkä version teen. Mietin pitkään kahden eri version välillä: sen ensimmäisen kauden endingmusiikkivideon pinkkitakkisen ja tämän toteutuneen asukokonaisuuden. Totesin, että ending-versioon olisin tavinnut vieläkin enemmän sitä puuttuvaa taitoa, joten Nagisa toteutui sitten näin.

Nagisa had been on my cosplay list since the end of season one of Free!, but then I thought that I'm not so good that I can make it. Now as the second season of  Free! Came out I fell in love with Nagisa as a character even more and finally decided to make the costume no matter what. Then I had to choose what version I would make. I thought a long time between two different versions: first seasons ending theme video's version with the pinks jacket and this one that I made. I figured that the pinked jacket one would have required even more of the missing talent of mine, so I made Nagisa like this.

Ensimmäinen ongelma Nagisan toteuttamisessa tuli Iwatobi -takin kohdalla ja edelleen mietin oliko sen ostaminen lopulta hyvä vaihtoehto. Totesin alusta alkaen, että ompelutaitoni eivät riitä noin monimutkaisen urheilutakin ompelemiseen. Taistelin sitten itseni kanssa siitä haluanko mennä ostotakilla vai teenkö cossia ollenkaan. Päädyin siihen, että haluan kuitenkin cossata Nagisaa niin paljon, että ostotakki ei muun kokonaisuuden kannalta ole niin merkittävä. Aikaisemmatkin cossit olen toteuttanut pääasiassa kirpparivaatteista muokkaamalla, joten en ole niitäkään aivan alusta asti itse ommellut. (Arya on suurin poikkeus tähän: Siihen tein paidat täysin alusta asti itse ja mm. siksi se on edelleen mielestäni paras cossini.) Kirpparilta cossin osien ostamisen ja niiden muokkaamisen olen kuitenkin kokenut sallittavampani muidenkin cossaajien mielestä, sillä kirppareiden koluaminen sen juuri oikean värisen paidan löytämiseksi ei kuitenkaan ole maailman helpointa.

First problem I had with Nagisa was the Iwatobi jacket and still I'm wondering was buying it the best choice. It was clear to me since the beginning that my sewing skills were not enough to make such a complicated sport jacket. Then I fought with myself between if I wanted to do the cosplay with a bought jacket or then not do it at all. I decided that I want to cosplay Nagisa too much to not do it a all, so I thought that a bought jacket wouldn't be that much of a problem with the rest of the costume. I've also made my earlier cosplay's by modifying the clothes from ones I've bought form flea market/some other discount department store, so I've not made them from the beginning. (Arya is a big exception in this: For it I made the shirts from the beginning and among other things that is why I consider it my best cosplay yet.) I've noticed that buying from flea markets is more allowed within the cosplay community in Finland at least, as it is not the easiest task to find the perfect shade shirt in those stores.

Takin ostaminen tuotti minulle kuitenkin hirveän paljon ahdistusta, sillä arvostan Suomen yleistä cosplaykulttuuria korkealle juuri itsetekemisen takia. Siksi olenkin menneissä cosseissani pyrkinyt tekemään tasoni mukaan ne osat, jotka pystyn itse. Tulevaisuudessa taitoni toivottavasti kehittyvät vielä niin paljon, että pystyn tekemään entistä enemmän alusta asti itse ja samalla vaikeampia cosseja. Vaikka Suomessa itsetekemisen kulttuuri on cosplayssa vahva, sellaisen käsityksen olen kuitenkin saanut, että muiden maiden cosplayscenessä ostopuvulla coniin menemistä ei katsota niin pahasti. Onhan cosplayn perimmäinen tarkoitus kuitenkin fanittamisen osoittaminen. Korjaatkoon joku paremmin tietävä käsitykseni, jos puhun puuta heinää.

Buying the jacket made me feel so much anxiety, because I value highly the general Finnish cosplay culture of making all the things you can from scratch yourself. That's why I've been trying to make the parts for my cosplays that I can make from scratch. Hopefully my skills in cosplay will develop so much, that I'll be able to make a lot more from scratch and make even more difficult costumes. Although the Finnish cosplayers highly value making things themselves, I've gotten the idea that in other countries showing up to a convention with a bought cosplay isn't such a bad thing. As cosplay's main idea is to show that you are a fan of something. If I'm talking rubbish right now, please correct my views.

Sisäinen taisteluni ostotakin moraaliudesta jatkui conissakin. En kuitenkaan saanut mitään ilkeitä kommentteja tai katseita, (tai en huomannut niitä, jos sain), muutama ihminen kyllä tuli ottamaan kuvia. Nyt en enää tiedä jaksaisinko välittää siitä, jos joku tulisi sanomaan ettei cossini ollut oikea cossi, kun en tehnyt sitä alusta asti itse, vaikka olisinkin kaikki muut osat muokannut jostain, enkä ostanut suoraan. Määrittelen cossaanneeni viikonloppuna jo ihan siksi, että rintakehä ja pää ovat binderin ja peruukin takia kuolleet sunnuntaina. Mitä mieltä te lukijat olette tästä asiasta? Saako yksi cossin osa olla ostettu, jos muut on vähintään muokattu kirpparivaatteista? Onko Suomen cosplaykulttuurissa mitään järkeä, kun se vaatii cossaajia tekemään itse kaiken alusta asti ja näin asettaa kamalat paineet ainakin minulle?

My inner fight about the morality of the bought jacket continued to the con too. I didn't get any mean comments or looks (or didn't notice them, if I did), a few people came to take my picture though. Now I don't think that I would care if some one said that my cosplay wasn't a real one, just because I haven't made all the parts myself, although all the other parts were at least modified from something. I consider that I've been cosplaying last weekend just because my chest and head were sore on Sunday from the binder and the wig. What do you readers think about this? Is Finland's cosplay culture insane, when it demands cosplayers to do everything they can from scratch and thus makes at least me feel pressured?

Henkisen takkiongelman lisäksi cossissa oli muitakin osia joista huolehtia ja takin jälkeen seuraava oli peruukki. Ebay -ostoni oli aluksi aivan liian pitkä ja sitä piti muokata kovallakin kädellä. En ollut aikaisemmin leikannut peruukkia, aikaisempia cosseja varten on tarvinnut vain stailata, joten mietin pitkään, että mitäköhän tästä nyt tulee. Seuraava cosplayhankintani tulee varmaankin olemaan peruukkipää, sillä totesin, että ilman sitä sai tehdä kohtuuttoman paljon töitä peruukin muokkaamiseksi. Peruukkitelineessa ei nähnyt kuinka pitkiltä hiukset näyttävät naamaa vasten, joten koko ajan piti siirtää peruukkia päähän ja takaisin telineeseen. Lopulta leikkasin ainakin peruukin etuosaa niin, että se oli suoraan päässäni. Olen kuitenkin peruukkiin tyytyväinen näin jälkeenpäin.

Besides my mental jacket problem the costume had other parts to worry about too and the next one after the jacket was the wig. My Ebay -bought wig was too long at the beginning and I had to cut it harshly. I hadn't cut a wig before, only had to style them for the previous cosplays, so I wondered how I'm going to survive this. My next purchase for cosplay is probably going to be a head for wigs, as on the wig stall I couldn't see how long or short the hair is. So I had to put the wig on the stall then back on my head again and so on. Eventually I ended up cutting the front of it while the wig was on me. I'm glad how the wig turned out afterwards.

Ompeluosuuksissa pääsin yllättävän helpolla tämän cossin kanssa. Vanhat urheiluhousut löytyivät nimittäin isän kaapista, ja olivat joskus olleet siis sopivat paljon pienemmälle isälle. Nyt niitä tarvitsi vain lyhentää ja kaventaa, sekä lisätä uusi kuminauha.

The sewing for this cosplay as easy. I found old sport trousers from my dads wardrobe, they had once been great for my then smaller dad. Now I only had to shorten and take them in and add a new elastic band.

Keltainen t-paita oli yllättävän vaikea metsästettävä. Mistään ei tuntunut löytyvän sellaista ilman mitään kuviota tai printtiä. Kiertelinkin monia kertoja kirppareita. Lopulta löysin yhden keltaisen t-paidan kirpparilta ja toisen K-citymarketista viikkoa myöhemmin. Kumpikin maksoi jotain 2€. Sitten pitikin päättää kumpi olisi parempi Nagisaa varten. Päädyin lopulta citymarketista ostamaani lähinnä siksi, että se oli vähän isompi ja peitti siten paremmin muodot. (Toinen T-paita meni myöhemmin hyötykäyttöön, sillä teimme painotöitä koulun leirillä viime viikolla.)

The yellow t-shirt was surprisingly hard to find. All of them seemed to have some kind of print or writing on them. I circled around flea markets a few times. Finally I found two different shirts, both cost something around 2€. Then I had to decide which of them was better. I decided this one because it was a little bit bigger and would cover my body better that way. (The other t-shirt went to a useful purpose later, as we did template painting on our school camp last week.)

Sitten pitikin tehdä siihen maalaukset. Selkäpuolen maalaus osoittautui ei-ehkä-niin-yllättäen haastellisemmaksi jo senkin takia ettei sitä pystynyt tekemään sabluunana. Niinpä päädyin piirtämään sen ensin graffitikynällä ensin paperille, sitten suoraan paitaan ja sen jälkeen maalaamaan päälle. Silti en ole siihen täysin tyytyväinen, sillä varjoja kuvaan ei saanut näin mukaan millään. Etupuolen Iwatobi -tunnus oli helpoin toteuttaa sabluunalla. Sabluunalla toteutin myös kanjit paidan selkäpuolella.

Then I had to paint the shirt. The back painting was not-so-surprisingly more difficult firstly because I couldn't do it as a template. Well I ended up drawing it to paper first, then to the shirt and lastly painting it straight on the drawing. I'm not quite happy about it mostly because I couldn't get the shadows in at all this way. The front sides Iwatobi -sign was easy to make with a template. I used template to paint the kanjis of the back of the shirt too.

Nagisan silmät taas näyttivät joissain kuvissa liiloilta ja joissain pinkeiltä. Suomalaisista nettikaupoista en löytänyt kuin liilat, joten niillä mentiin. Nämä piilarit tekivät silmät vähän elottoman näköisiksi, mutta sopivat Nagisalle paremmin kuin omat siniset silmäni. Nagisalle löytyi kengät ihan kotoa, sillä pikkusiskollani sattui olemaan tuollaiset pinkkiä sisältävät valkoiset lenkkarit. Ne olivat pari kokoa liian isot, mutta paksut sukat eivät talvella haitanneet menoa ollenkaan. Proppina toimineet uimalasitkin löytyivät kotoa valmiiksi. Nagisa oli yllättävän mukava cossi tehdä ja erityisesti pitää päällä.

Nagisa's eyes looked purple in some pictures and pink in some. I found only purple lenses from a Finnish online store so I went with them then. These contacts make eyes look a little dead, but they fit Nagisa better than my own blue eyes. I found shoes for Nagisa at home, as my little sister happened to have these sneakers that contained pink. They were a few sizes too big, but a thick socks were just great for this weather. The swimming goggles I already had too. Nagisa was surprisingly easy to make and especially comfortable to wear.
